Digicel millionaire gets perfect birthday gift
At 5 p.m. last Friday, Jahmoy had only $1,000 to his name, but an hour later he became a millionaire.
Telecommunications giant Digicel, through its just-concluded Rich Togeddah summer promotion, made the St Andrew inner-city resident $10 million richer.
Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, an elated Jamoy said he is still over the moon, adding that his prayers did not go unanswered.
"To be honest, a one dead $1,000 mi have inna mi name. Mi enter the competition about 55 to 60 times and mi just pray and tell myself say mi ago win but mi did think is about a million mi ago win. The draw was suppose to be the 14th of September and mi birthday was the 15th, suh mi just expect say that was my gift from God," he said.
The 30-year-old shopkeeper said there were instances that he became so strapped for cash that he is always having to borrow money. He said on Friday morning when Digicel sent out a text message reminding everyone to listen for a call that could make them into a millionaire, he instantly saved the number.
"Mi store di number from in di morning suh from the phone start to ring mi say 'Yes, a Digicel a call'. When mi get the call mi excited and thankful suh till," he said.
Jahmoy said his life has not changed significantly as yet because he has not received the cash in hand but said when he collects his fortune he will be expanding his small business.
"Yuh know I am from the garrison so I am going to help out a few family members, friends and such. Then I am going to put something aside for a rainy day because I am not going to allow myself to get bruk again. Yuh dun know with the little pandemic nutten nah too gwan suh all a this is just a blessing from God and Digicel," Jahmoy said. "I don't think I want any new friends because the more friend mi have, the quicker the money ago done and mi nuh intend to done my money."
Meanwhile, second place winner Shannon, who won $5 million said that he had "whole heap a things to clear up" and saw the competition as a way out. He was initially disheartened when he wasn't a $1 million winner but when he got the call for the bigger prize "mi almost tun fool."
The new millionaires gained entries into the promotion each time they dialled *142# or call 142 from their Digicel mobiles. Each entry cost $100, and customers could enter several times.
Now in its 20th year in Jamaica, Digicel has given away over $1 billion in cash and prizes to its customers.
