Campbell sets up Mount Pleasant’s semi win
Last season Mount Pleasant defeated Arnett Gardens in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) semi-finals to book their place in the final, but it required two goals from an unlikely source in Leonardo Rankin to secure their place in the decider.
On Sunday at Sabina Park, the St Ann-based Mount Pleasant also needed another two-goal hero in Devonte Campbell to secure their passage to the final next Sunday at the National Stadium, after a 2-1 win on the night for a 3-2 aggregate victory over Waterhouse.
It is not regular that the talented player put in decisive performances like on Sunday, but he insists that his performance was no surprise, because he always looks to perform in big matches.
"I am very grateful and happy to help the team in any way possible, and I am glad we won.
"I always want the big moment to turn up and show the world what I can do, and that is what I did. I am always expecting performances like this," he said.
Sunday's double strike took Campbell's tally for the season to four goals, but he believes he should be producing more.
"I always try to get on the score sheet, and I am always working on my end product, which my teammates are always encouraging me to get that right.
"They are always telling me that I beat two or three people constantly every match, and it is just the final decision.
"I could have got more goals this season, but you just have to move forward, you can't go back to the past, and I got it right today, and I am hoping that I keep improving on that," he said.
The 20-year-old Campbell, who went on a two-week trial with English League One club Charlton Athletic in January, said that though, to date, he remains the only Mount Pleasant Academy graduate to matriculate into the star-studded senior team, he feels no pressure.
"I know my ability and what I can do. The coaches and my teammates know what I can do, so it is about going out on the field and showing that I can deliver.
"It feels great, and I am excited to go to back-to-back (JPL) finals," he added.
On Sunday in the final, Mount Pleasant will face Cavalier, who defeated Arnett Gardens 3-1 last Sunday to advance 4-2 on aggregate from the other semi.
