Cavalier’s Calvin ready for Reggae Boyz duties
Cavalier's standout forward for the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season Jalmaro Calvin is relishing the opportunity to play for Jamaica's Reggae Boyz should the call come his way.
Calvin, who ended the season as Cavalier's top scorer with 16 goals and helped them to lift the JPL trophy for a third time in their history, also holds an Antiguan passport and is eligible to play for that country. On Sunday at the National Stadium, Cavalier won the title after a 4-3 penalty shootout win over defending champions Mount Pleasant.
The 20-year-old Calvin, who represented Antigua in the Concacaf Under-20 qualifiers two years ago, admits that he will make himself available for selection, should Reggae Boyz's coach Heimir Hallgrimsson summons him for national duties.
"If I get a call (by Jamaica), of course, why not? I don't really know at the moment (if national coaches are noticing me), but if I get the chance, I will take it, no doubt," he said.
Although not a full member of the team that lost the final last season, Calvin said he was elated they could avenge their defeat to Mount Pleasant a year ago, when they lost the final 2-1.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match. We knew we had to go out and do our best and fight and that's what we did, and we got our revenge," Calvin said.
Nevertheless, he was proud of himself and Cavalier's triumph, pointing out that his immediate aim is to transfer overseas into a league with a better standard, which will help uplift his performance on the pitch.
"This is my first full season (with Cavalier). Hopefully, I can move overseas and play football at a higher level. So let us see, but as a footballer, you always want to improve and that is my aim to improve and get better," he said.
"I am just excited that I could help Cavalier win the title. I am very proud of myself and my teammates. I am a champion so I have to feel proud, and I will celebrate this," he commented.
