Sensational Soul to lead off Subratie-Dawkins double
SENSATIONAL SOUL could kick off the late double for Gary Subratie and Dane Dawkins in Saturday's feature events, the Billy Williams Memorial and OTB Appreciation Trophy, middle-distance events in which closers will be lethal at seven furlongs and six and a half, respectively.
SENSATIONAL SOUL made up significant ground at six and a half furlongs, finishing fourth in a three-way photo behind WALL STREET TRADER, OIL MACHINE and DON KWESI in the Delapenha Memorial.
With a half-furlong longer to travel, SENSATIONAL SOUL, last year's 2000 Guineas winner, should have a hot pace to storm at with FLORINDIA and RANI BANGALA expected to dictate the fractions.
Meanwhile, Subratie's STARDOM, a full brother to 2021 Jamaica Derby and St Leger winner, CALCULUS, an impressive three-year-old maiden winner at six furlongs on December 27, won like a horse begging to be trained.
TAG TEAM
STARDOM returns with tongue-tie fitted, tackling Jason DaCosta's pair of BIGGER BOSS and LONDON SPIRIT, who will be using speed and stamina, respectively, to tag-team STARDOM. However, Subratie's plans could be derailed in the Billy Williams Memorial by United States-bred UNSPUN.
Prior to making open allowance late last season, UNSPUN had placed against future grade-one runners - TIZ TOK, DESERT OF MALIBU, RIDEALLDAY and MOJITO - eventually lowering class to beat INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD and PROVIDENT at overnight allowance.
UNSPUN's rider, Christopher Mamdeen, has been on a feature-race streak, booting home Lindy Delapenha Memorial winner WALL STREET TRADER and PACK PLAYS, who added last Saturday's Chairman's Trophy to his January 31 Eileen Cliggott Memorial win in grade one.
After placing third behind speedsters MAMMA MIA and MONEY MARKET on graduating to open allowance last October, UNSPUN twice punched above his level, outclassed in back-to-back grade-one races, the Jamaica Cup and Mouttet Mile, won by MOJITO and RIDEALLDAY, respectively.
Though unraced since the December 6 Mouttet Mile, UNSPUN is the proven class in the line-up, a sleeper returning off a lay-up, possibly freshened to strike.
