Mr Vegas among music icons receiving national honours

From 'Heads High' to King's House! Dancehall and reggae star Mr Vegas is set to receive one of Jamaica's national honours after being recognised for his outstanding contribution to reggae music.

The entertainer, whose given name is Clifford Smith, has been appointed to the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer (OD) as part of this year's National Honours and Awards.

Mr Vegas has been a fixture on the local and international music scene since the late 1990s, delivering hits such as Nike Air, Heads High, Hot Gal Today featuring Sean Paul, Bruk It Down and Hot Wuk.

Over the years, he has also collaborated with several music heavyweights, including Beenie Man, Shaggy, Barrington Levy, Vybz Kartel, and international superstar Beyoncé, appearing on a remix of her 2014 track Standing on the Sun.

Mr Vegas is one of five entertainment figures appointed to the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Officer this year.

Also receiving the honour are Michael Anthony Bennett for his contribution to the Jamaican music industry, Wilburn Theodore "Stranger" Cole (posthumously) for his contribution to the development of Jamaican music, acclaimed producer Robert Livingston for his contribution to the music industry locally and internationally, and legendary guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith for his contribution to Jamaican music.

Among those named to receive the Badge of Honour for Meritorious Service are Herman Constantine "Bongo" Davis for his contribution to Jamaican music and culture, Shirley Deloris Findley-Willis for her contribution to gospel music, Lawrence Anthony "Dundas" McDonald for service to entertainment, and Carlyle Palmer for helping grow Jamaican music in the United Kingdom through Jet Star Music.

The recipients will be formally invested during the National Honours and Awards Ceremony at King's House on National Heroes Day.
