Ex-cop killed after alleged taxi hijack and police chase
A former Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) member was shot and killed by police on Wednesday evening after allegedly hijacking a taxi, firing at lawmen and leading them on a dramatic chase through sections of Kingston.
Dead is 34-year-old Sean Raby, who police sources say was dismissed from the force before completing his probationary period due to misconduct and conduct considered prejudicial to the good order and reputation of the organisation.
Reports are that about 6:20 p.m., Raby boarded a taxi as a passenger heading towards downtown Kingston.
During the journey, the taxi operator reportedly stopped to pick up a female passenger, sparking an argument after Raby allegedly objected to the move.
The situation escalated when the driver reportedly noticed that Raby was armed with a firearm.
Fearing for his safety, the taxi operator allegedly placed the vehicle in neutral, jumped out and alerted a passing police patrol.
Police say Raby then took control of the taxi and sped away, triggering a chase through the city.
During the pursuit, he allegedly opened fire on the police.
The chase came to a dramatic end when the vehicle crashed into a light pole along Camp Road.
Investigators say Raby was fatally shot during a subsequent confrontation with officers.
A 9mm pistol loaded with nine rounds of ammunition was reportedly recovered at the scene.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the incident.
The fatal shooting is the first involving the security forces for the month of June. As of June 3, a total of 139 people had been fatally shot by members of the security forces since the start of the year.
